Webster Batista-Lin Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

BATON ROUGE, LA (04/08/2020)-- Webster Batista-Lin of Winchendon, Massachusetts, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Batista-Lin was initiated at University of Massachusetts.

Batista-Lin is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

Though the classrooms are empty, Sizer Food Pantry still serving families

In the past few weeks, the Sizer School Food Pantry has been conducting extensive outreach and providing roughly 15 families weekly with grocery support. Teachers at Sizer have been using remote connections to each out to students in regards to food and other needs!

“We have had tremendous generosity within our community; the Sizer Food Pantry remains open to support families during this unprecedented time,” said Jenna Lavery-Quigley, school adjustment counselor at Sizer School.

Lavery-Quigley has put together an optional/voluntary School/Home Resources survey in order to give families a chance to connect with staff, and for staff to provide an avenue for families to reach out, if they are struggling. Students and families can also connect with advisors to get connected to confidential support.

“The School/Home resource survey will help us meet families' needs to the best of our abilities,” said Lavery-Quigley. The form can be found at: https://forms.gle/QWtZF6XTjsftCh1u8

Although Governor Charlie Baker has required that schools remain closed through at least May 4, the Sizer School Pantry will remain open.

“We have a large supply of grocery staples, such as pasta, sauce, canned chicken/tuna, fruit, cereal, and many other items. If you could use it, don’t hesitate to ask! The Food Pantry is just one of the ways we Think, Care, and Act at Sizer School,” said Lavery-Quigley. The pantry can be accessed confidentially by contacting foodpantry@sizerschool.org.

The pantry is in need of the following items: toilet paper, sanitizer, disinfectant cleaning supplies, and toiletries, soap, detergent, paper towels, and gift cards to local grocery stores.
