Winchendon (October 11, 2021) - State Senator Anne M. Gobi (D-Spencer) recognized the hard work and dedication of Winchendon resident and Fitchburg High School teacher Aurea Rivera.

Latinos for Education held its first annual State of Latino Education Summit last week. Rivera was recognized for her impact, in the North Central Region, as a Spanish Teacher and department facilitator at Fitchburg High School.

Following last night's citation presentation Senator Gobi offered the following statement. "I am glad to recognize Mrs. Rivera for her excellence among our educators. She is a valued member of the North Central region and a tribute to our community. As a teacher, Mrs. Rivera is the best example of the positive influence that LatinX culture has shared across the Commonwealth. I am grateful to her for the inspiration she provides to her students and all of us."

When asked about her recognition Mrs. Rivera said, "It was an incredible experience. I am honored to be recognized. I am blessed to have such a wonderful support system from my family, teachers, colleagues, mentors, leaders, and my students. My hope is to be an inspiration for many Latino students to encourage them to follow their dreams and to never give up."

"The goal of the State of Latino Education Summit was to spotlight the critical role that Latino educators and leaders play in achieving educational equity for Latino students. We know there are many challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated, but with educators like Mrs. Rivera and leaders like Senator Gobi, we can tackle those challenged and chart a new path forward for Latino education," said Manny Cruz, Advocacy Director of Latinos for Education New England.

The Conference and ceremony was held in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15th to October 15th. During this time, across the United States the influences of Hispanic/LatinX culture and contributions of community members are celebrated and recognized.
