Pollyanna Davis

POLLYANNA DAVIS
December 14, 1928 ~ November 11, 2021 (Age 92)

GREENFIELD, MA - Pollyanna (Beal) Perry Davis, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2021 after a period of failing health.

She was born in Gardner, MA on December 14, 1928 to Ernest Gibson and Marion Louisa (Stoddard) Beal. Polly was raised in Winchendon, MA and graduated from Murdock High School in 1946. At 17, she enrolled in the Elliot Community Hospital School of Nursing in Keene NH, where she earned her license as a Registered Nurse. Polly's nursing career spanned over 50 years in a variety of capacities including Hospital nursing, Public Health and for 18 years, her biggest love, School Nursing. Prior to her retirement from Northfield Elementary School in 1998, Polly had provided health services to all of the schools in the Pioneer School District. During her tenure in Northfield, she was nominated for and received the award of School Nurse of the Year. This was a well-deserved and greatly appreciated honor.

Polly was a very active member of the former First Congregational Church of Greenfield. Over time she served on the Diaconate, and the Mission Committee and participated in all manner of fundraising activities including Church suppers and Tag Sales.

Polly was both musical and artistic. She was also an avid crafter and put her skills to use for family and friends as well as contributing to the community through participation in Hat and Mitten drives as well as a local Prayer Shawl group. Polly also volunteered many hours over the years at both the Baystate Franklin Hospital Gift Shop and the Franklin Area Survival Center. An avid genealogist, Polly amassed a huge amount of family history tracing her roots back 12 generations in New England, finding many direct ancestors to be among the first European colonists including a number of passengers on the Mayflower. A true "Yankee" at heart, Polly chose to spend her life in New England but enjoyed traveling during her retirement. She was able to visit Iceland and England and enjoyed a number of trips around the US.

Polly became a young widow with the passing of her first husband, C. David Perry in 1963. She married her beloved second husband, Howard A. Davis, in 1969. For the next 24 years they enjoyed their time together at home, and at their summer cottage on Lake Monomonac. Often they traveled around New England to attend Square Dances or to scour town records and cemeteries (pre-internet!) for genealogical data. Polly had taken a leave of absence to care for Howard during his final illness, but returned to her post in 1993 after his passing.

Polly touched a great many lives both personally and professionally and will be long remembered for her kindness and dedication. She will be most sorely missed by her daughters, Elizabeth Perry and Victoria Perry as well as her granddaughter, Carrie Merritt and great grandson Finnian Blue all currently of Greenfield. She also leaves fond memories with a number of nieces and nephews and friends and neighbors.

In keeping with Polly's wishes, there will be no services at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were made under the direction of Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield.
