Greg L. Cardinal

GREG L. CARDINAL
August 7, 1939 ~ March 3, 2022 (Age 82)

Gregory L. Cardinal, 82, died peacefully on March 3, 2022, under Hospice care at Renaissance Manor on Cabot St., Holyoke, MA. He was born on Aug. 7, 1939, in Manchester, NH, and was promptly adopted by the late Raymond and Helen (Kleczka) Cardinal. There he attended parochial schools and then Tilton Academy. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve Force, and later as a military policeman, in the Regular Army, serving honorably in Korea.

Upon discharge, Greg went back to academe, first to Clark University, and then to UC Berkeley. He apprenticed in furniture restoration, developing a life-long interest in antiques. Greg later worked in private industry and for the Massachusetts unemployment office, before starting his own ceramics business.

Retirement enabled Greg to enjoy the life of a snowbird, typically spending warmer months in Winchendon, MA with his wife, Julia (White) Cardinal. He wintered at his home in Hudson, FL. While there, he took up volunteer work with the Guardian ad Litem office in Pasco County, serving the 5th Judicial Court. He was their longest serving volunteer. He was proud to help children and families, most of whom were struggling with the ravages of substance abuse. He was a member of The Spirit of Life Unitarian-Universalists of Odessa, FL.

In New England, Greg was a past master of Artisan Lodge of Masons. He was a member of the Winchendon Kiwanis Club, and the Friends of the Beals Memorial Library. He also volunteered to help prepare the Community Suppers served weekly by the Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church. These trips were typically preceded by a visit to the Toadstool's used book section where he could always find something of interest in the history section. Greg was a dilettante, enjoying classical music, history, classic films, travel, museums, horticulture, and science--especially historical geology.

Besides his wife, whom he married in 2001, Greg leaves in-laws Willard White and his wife Lee of Athol, M. Winifred Morgan and her husband F. Scott Morgan of Bridgeton, NJ, and Rosemary E. White of Haddonfield, NJ; five nieces and nephews and two grand nieces, along with the descendants of the cousins who preceded him in death: Betty (Kleczka) Lapierre of Greenfield, Barbara (Kleczka) Migliozzi of Westborough, and Donald W. Kleczka of Worcester, MA. All were loved by Aunt Marion B. Kleczka, who died in 2003.

Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, is directing arrangements. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery following a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Winchendon Fire Department, 405 Central St., Winchendon, MA 01475 or a charity of the donor's choosing.

Joseph G. LaCroix

JOSEPH G. LACROIX
May 10, 1945 ~ February 28, 2022 (Age 76)

Joe LaCroix 76, of Fitchburg, MA, formerly from Winchendon, MA, passed away on Monday, February 28, 2022, at Alliance Health at Baldwinville-Beacon Hospice after a battle with cancer.

He was born in Fitchburg, MA, on May 10, 1945, and was the son of the late Joseph G. and Irene R. (LaRoche) LaCroix. Known to many as "Little Joe", he was a used car dealer, owning Cormier Auto Sales, Inc. in Leominster, MA. Later moving to Winchendon, MA, where he owned and ran Lake Street Motors and also owned and ran "The Barn" on Route 12 in Winchendon, MA, with his life partner Maggie. They collected and sold antiques on the weekends for many years. He was a NASCAR fan, loved car shows, and built custom hotrods.

Joe spent most of his life on the track driving the #50, as a member of the NHSTRA (New Hampshire Short-Track Racing) at Monadnock, Hudson, Lee USA, and Claremont Speedways. He was a member of the Jaffrey Ice Racing Association, Lake Region Ice Racing Club and Lake Whalom Ice Racing Association. Also was a member of the Eastwood Club of Fitchburg, MA.

He leaves two sons Joe LaCroix of Jaffrey, NH and David LaCroix of Fitchburg, MA; daughter Julie Cormier and her husband Roger of Royalston, MA; four grandchildren Cody, Josh, Jeremy and Katelyne; and several great-grandchildren; also an extended family of Timothy Robichaud, John Jalbert and Chris Ballas. Joe was predeceased by his "Angel" and partner in life, Marguerite Stockwell, who passed away on November 25, 2019 and his brother Ronald LaCroix, who passed away in 2000.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 10, in the Pieta Chapel in St. Joseph's Cemetery, 486 Clarendon Street, Fitchburg, MA at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow. Joanne M. Doherty

JOANNE M. DOHERTY
April 13, 1934 ~ 2022

Life of Joanne M. (Anttila) Maki, Doherty.

Born: April 13, 1934 in Fitchburg, MA. Graduated from Fitchburg High School, class of 52. Worked as a clerk at Woolworth's while in High School.

After graduation, Ralph Howard (her class advisor) recommended that she take the civil service exam, which led to a position at the War Department in Washington, D.C. working for the Navy as a procurement Clerk in the documents section of the Bureau of Contracts for two years.

While raising five children, she became a CNA in 1965 and High Street Nursing Home. Joanne was a lunch lady in the cafeteria for four years. She also worked at Sanitoy for eight and a half years and at Avery-Dennison for 17 years.

Active at many local churches including Calvinistic Congregational Church/Faith United Parish as a Deaconess, Elm Street Congregational Church as an Elder and member of the choir and lastly, a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she was instrumental in starting the rummage sale, as well as organizing the Attic Treasures for the holiday bazaar. She especially enjoyed attending the Mother's Day tea with family members, wearing the appropriate hats. She was active at the Fitchburg Senior Center as the "bread lady". As a member of the YMCA, along with her husband Dick, were Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Joanne took joy in dancing, travel and the company of friends and family; especially her Finnish heritage. She is survived by her children; Gayle Cote of Winchendon, MA, Kenneth Maki of Fitzwilliam, NH, Keith Maki of Orange, MA, and Jewel Richmond of Henderson, NV.

Eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

She id predeceased by her husband, Richard Doherty in 2009, her sister Barbera Maki in 2019, her older brother Eddie Anttila in 2007, her younger brother Paul Anttila in 1992, George Maki in 1989, and her son Kevin Maki, retired U.S. Navy in 2020.

A celebration of life will be held in May.

James F. Hill

JAMES F. HILL
November 19, 1930 ~ March 1, 2022 (Age 91)

GARDNER - James F. Hill, 91, of Gardner, died peacefully Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at his residence, with his family at his side.

He was born in Gardner on November 19, 1930, son of the late Charles and Ida (Chapalonis) Hill and was a lifelong resident of Gardner.

Jim proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War. Jim worked as a driver for many years at the former Templeton Developmental Center until his retirement. He was also a member and the bar manager of Ovila Case Post 905 VFW for many years. An avid sports fan, Jim rooted for the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

His wife, Barbara (Streeter) Hill, died in 2001. He leaves five children, Sharron Hill of Baldwinville, Susan Bourgeois of Gardner, James Hill and partner Sandra LeBlanc of FL, David Hill and wife Molly of CA and Jeffrey Hill and wife Melissa of Winchendon, as well as 16 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel Melanson, Beverly Johnson and Shirley Zoll.

Private military funeral honors will be held at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caregivers at Compassus for their love and care.

Nancy M. Hawke

NANCY M. HAWKE
March 5, 2022

Nancy M. (Moschetti) Hawke went home to the Lord Saturday, March 5, 2022. Nancy was born in the Otter River section of Templeton to Anthony and Jeanette (Dupre) Moschetti. She moved to Gardner in 1952 and has resided there since that time. Nancy graduated from Gardner High School in 1956. She then went on to Mount Ida College in Newton and eventually took more courses and graduated from Mount Wachusett Community College. Nancy met and married the love of her life, Robert D. Hawke, to whom she was married for 50 years at the time of his death in 2009. Together, Bob and Nancy raised five children, Linda, Cyndi, Heather, Dean, and Mark.

Nancy was active in her community as a volunteer at Red Cross blood drives, the Gardner Museum, South Gardner Historical Society, Knowlton Foundation, Golden Agers, local A.A.R.P and Friends of the Levi Heywood Memorial Library. Nancy was a member of the Winchendon Garden Club and was known for her lovely gardens. Besides planting her own garden, Nancy planted and maintained the flower garden at the Gardner Senior Center for several years.

Nancy was an artist and quilter. She belonged to the Greater Gardner Artist Association and Montachusett Quilt Guild. Her paintings and quilts will be enjoyed by her family for many years to come. Nancy spent time at the gym and with the Chair City Walkers. She participated in an annual 5k race put on by Fitness Concepts Gym and walked every Thursday with her friends in the walking group.

The First Baptist Church of South Gardner was a very important part of Nancy's life as she served on various boards as well as, at one time, taught Sunday school.

Nancy felt very lucky to have her dream job as a realtor for many years with her mentor, Rick Morin.

Nancy will be sadly missed by daughters, Cyndi Leroy and her husband Tim, and Heather Dube and her husband Tom, sons, Dean Hawke and his wife Tammy, and Mark Hawke and his wife Shelly, grandchildren, Merissa Dube, Jacob Dube, Matthew Hawke and Justin Hawke, and great-granddaughter, Madison Dube. She will also be missed by her brothers Tony Moschetti and Greg Moschetti and his wife Connie.

Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Robert D. Hawke, a daughter, Linda (Hawke) Scotland, and a brother, Robert Moschetti.

Funeral Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
