Events at Nova Arts This Weekend

Nova Arts is proud to continue in person entertainment at 48 Emerald St in Keene NH!

Friday, April 15 is a Coffeehouse Poetry Night with Pauline Michelle and Catherine Lang. Saturday, April 16 the band Giraffes? Giraffes! will be playing. Monday, April 18 COME will be performing; J Mascis will be opening.

On Friday join Pauline & Catherine for what can be described as half writing workshop, half performance. Work on a new poem, read an old poem, or just come to listen to others' poetry. All experiences are welcome, whether you are a published poet or "not a writer." Queer positive space, celebrating all identities. Doors at 7:00 p.m., by donation. Pay what you want here, or donate cash in person the night of. Money goes to the session leaders and to Nova Arts.

Guitar and drums duo GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! have been making fiercely unique music since their explosion into the San Francisco Bay area in 2005. Their mostly instrumental, odd-time compositions quickly grabbed the attention of listeners worldwide and their second album More Skin With Milk-Mouth is a quintessential math rock album. With every new release, they continually make music that is both melodic and technical, experimental yet accessible--and the result is a sound that is both transcendent and incredible fun. Mindbending guitarist Ava Mendoza will also perform; she has worked with everyone from Violent Femmes to John Zorn to Carla Bozulich to Malcolm Mooney. This bill will have your jaw on the floor.

COME came to be in the early 90s in Boston, formed by Thalia Zedek (Live Skull, E), Chris Brokaw (Codeine, the Lemonheads), Arthur Johnson, and Sean O'Brien. They released several albums on Matador records and toured with Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, and Sugar, among others. If you haven't listened to them, this show will complete a puzzle in your head that you maybe didn't know was missing a piece.

J Mascis has created some of the era's signature songs, albums and styles. As a skier, golfer, songwriter, skateboarder, record producer, and musician, J has few peers. The laconically-based roar of his guitar, drums and vocals have driven a long string of many bands including Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Gobblehoof, Velvet Monkeys, The Fog, Witch, and Sweet Apple.

Tickets for these events can be purchased on our website novaarts.org, under the event tab. Don't forget to get your tickets to this year's Thing in The Spring, 35 bands on two stages over four days.

Nova Arts is supported by and under the fiscal sponsorship of Arts Alive.

MWCC to host Earth Day Webinar Honoring Senator Robert D. Wetmore: The Role of Forests in Carbon Sequestration - first in a series

GARDNER, MA - April 14, 2022 - In connection with Earth Day, Mount Wachusett Community College's Senator Robert D. Wetmore Center for Forest and Wood Products will host the first in a series of panel discussions of environmental issues as well as the forest and wood products industries in the Commonwealth. The event will be co-hosted by Massachusetts Senator Anne Gobi, a friend and colleague of Senator Wetmore.

"I am excited about this terrific partnership with Mount Wachusett Community College and grateful for the opportunity to participate and to honor the memory of Senator Bob Wetmore," said Senator Anne Gobi. "Senator Wetmore had a deep appreciation for nature and the important role our forests play. He would be pleased to know that others are willing to share their knowledge and engage in meaningful discourse," she added.

The first event titled "The Role of Forests in Carbon Sequestration" will be held virtually on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am and will be moderated by MWCC forestry professor and former wilderness firefighter George Locasio.

Joining Locasio are panelists Brian Hawthorn a Forester with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Laura Marx, Climate Solutions Scientist with The Nature Conservancy, and Emma G. Ellsworth, Executive Director of the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust.

Healthy diverse aged forests are critical to maintaining the biodiversity of Massachusetts," said Emma Ellsworth, Executive Director of the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust. "I am thrilled to be part of this Wetmore Center Series where we get to learn from the experts and dig into a nuanced discussion of the many roles our forests play in the Commonwealth."

Interested individuals are invited to submit questions prior to the event via the event website mwcc.edu/wetmore-series where they will also be able to register to attend.
