Coming Up at Nova Arts in Keene

Nova Arts is thrilled to welcome Xylouris White and Marisol Zilske!

KEENE, NH - Come join us and experience this pure magic on stage on Saturday, November 4th at 7 p.m. at 48 Emerald St, Keene, NH. Xylouris White is visiting Nova Arts to share their unmistakable music style. This pair consists of George playing Cretan lute and Jim playing drums, both coming from completely different musical backgrounds but meshing together to create a unique sound.

There are drummers and there are drummers. And then there is Jim White. Having first commanded international attention in the mid-1990s with the acclaimed Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three, the New York-based virtuoso is now the go-to guy for alt-A-list vocalists with collaboration in mind. All who have had the opportunity to work with Jim have expressed how his rhythm is mesmerizing. His distinctive playing style is one that can be mistaken for a full band one moment and something crisp and beautiful the next.

George Xylouris grew up in a musical village in Crete. From a young age, he grew his artistry by playing with friends. George accompanied his father attending music festivals and venues around Greece and Europe which led to his passion for creating music of his own. “He lived in Melbourne for eight years where he formed the band Xylouris Ensemble with musicians from diverse backgrounds who created a sound of varied origins. During that time they had an enthusiastic diverse following. He also took part in the local scene with the likes of Dirty Three, eventually leading to the formation of Xylouris White.

Since 2013 George Xylouris has been working with Jim White in their band Xylouris White. They have released four albums with a fifth due to be released on Drag City in early 2023. They have toured all over the world and are thankfully gracing the Nova Arts stage!

Marisol Zilske will be opening and playing a solo set this time around. She is aiming for a simpler sound than she has before. While figuring out what she wants from her originals, she's been testing the waters with heartier vocals, while remaining familiar to the rhythm guitar.

Doors are at 7:00 p.m and music will start at 8:00. Tickets are $20, the show is all ages and seating is limited!

Nova Arts is hosting a night filled with indie rock and punk!

KEENE, NH - The fuzz-pop/soft punk project TIFFY and rock sensations The Flems are coming to Keene on Thursday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. at 48 Emerald St, Keene, NH. Multi-instrumentalist Tiffany Sammy is already making waves with two acclaimed EPs and will be sure to get people moving with her alternative songs. Asian-American artist Tiffany Sammy announced her debut LP So Serious due out Nov. 3 via Totally Real Records / Dollhouse Lightning. This forthcoming collection of songs is a stirring coming-of-age narrative outlining the tumultuous path through social media, social disconnection, heartbreak and the drive for achievement.

Sammy grew up in California and is currently Boston-based, her love for music derived from catchy 90s rock that dominated the radio. TIFFY's compositional creations truly showcase her personality and have been described as exceptionally relatable. TIFFY's hook-loaded confessional songwriting recalls the dusky, kaleidoscopic musical approach of indie rock contemporaries Speedy Ortiz and Jay Som with irresistible melodies that harken to peak-era Weezer. Sammys' record, So Serious, is jammed with rawness and honesty, delivered with euphoric melody and grit guaranteeing to impact listeners.

The Flems consist of three men with a roaring passion for rock and roll. Expect KeKe Flem on vocals and bass, Davey Flem on vocals and guitar, and Kurtd Flem on drums. The Flems are based in Keene, New Hampshire, and inject a shock wave of punk influences into their music!

Doors are open at 7:00 p.m. and music will begin at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and this show is for all ages!

BARRE - Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust, Mass Audubon, East Quabbin Land Trust, DCR-Division of Water Supply Protection, and the Barre Conservation Commission have been collectively awarded $1.25 million through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Landscape Partnership Program to protect 973 acres.

"We're investing to protect our forests and agricultural land while strengthening our communities. This program is just one example of how we're taking a whole-of-government approach to making Massachusetts more resilient," said Governor Maura Healey. "Our Administration is proud to assist these communities in acquiring land and creating vibrant, accessible green space that will boost the quality of life in Massachusetts."

The Hawes Hill Conservation Corridor Project protects nine properties in Barre that will continue to be sustainably managed by private landowners for forestry, agriculture, and recreation. Conserving these properties will protect drinking water, promote climate resilience, enhance wildlife connectivity, support the local economy and conservation east of the Quabbin Reservoir.

"It is imperative to take a holistic approach to land protection and recognize the importance of strategically connecting crucial habitats," said Mass Audubon Senior Director of Land Conservation David Santomenna. "We're thrilled to work with Mount Grace and our other partners to combine these parcels, creating a protected corridor that will bolster the area's biodiversity and increase open space."

The Landscape Partnership Grant Program was created in 2011 to facilitate this kind of large-scale project that sustains the integrity and resilience of ecosystems, protect the viability of farm and forest economies, and expand public outdoor recreational opportunities while enhancing partnerships among state, municipal, and non-profit entities.

Senator Anne Gobi, who was appointed as the new Director of Rural Affairs in the Executive Office of Economic Development this spring, celebrated the ongoing work of the partnership, "Mount Grace continues to not only be great stewards of our lands, but also create strong public/private partnerships. I thank the Healey-Driscoll Administration for their unwavering support and understanding the importance of conservation and actions to sustain agricultural opportunities now and into the future."

One participating landowner, Phil Stevens of Carter & Stevens Farm, said that "everybody at the farm is proud to have helped get this project started and gratified to see so many neighbors involved and so much support from the participating land trusts."

A half hour from Worcester, The Hawes Hill Conservation Corridor partners collaborated with Barre landowners to thoughtfully design a project that stitches together a mosaic of biodiverse habitat, streams, and sustainably managed forests and farmland in a tightly knit geographical area.

"This is a very special opportunity for all of us," Mount Grace Conservation Director Sarah Wells summed up. "We are so grateful we'll be able to protect such a significant neighborhood in Barre. As always, we couldn't do any of this without the landowners who are choosing to conserve their farms, fields, and woods."

With the award of this grant funding from EEA, the project partners now have the obligation to raise the additional funds necessary and to coordinate the completion of the nine conservation restrictions to finish the project by the summer of 2024.
