Take the TOY TOWN TROLLEY On Saturdays Beginning January 11! FREE!

Beginning on Saturday, January 11, the Toy Town Trolley will be making three circuits around Winchendon and up to the Rindge shopping areas every Saturday. Rides are FREE to all residents! This service is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and sponsored by the Town of Winchendon, the Winchendon CAC, the Winchendon Council on Aging and the Winchendon CCAP Task Force.

NOTE: ORIGINAL SCHEDULE HAS CHANGED. Each circuit will start at Hyde Park and stop at the end of Pearl Drive, the Town Hall bus shelter, Dollar Tree Plaza, the YMCA/GFA bus shelter, CVS, the fire station bus shelter, Ipswich Drive, the end of Ready Drive, the end of Goodrich Drive and the Winchendon Community Park. From there the trolley will head up 202 (so you don't have to!) and stop to let off shoppers at Tractor Supply, Market Basket/Marshalls, Walmart and Hannaford. It then returns to Not Just Produced and Sippin' Serendipity and immediately starts its next circuit with Hyde Park. Shoppers who were let off on the first through fourth circuits can reboard the trolley for home when it returns.

The first circuit starts at Hyde Park at 9:15 a.m. and the last circuit leaves Hannaford at 2:51 p.m.

For a grid of the complete updated schedule with times, see https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1E0NiGrFeB_wtjV61TCosVYm0p5g4dKQ6vExvOrI9288/htmlview. Letter to the Editor

Open Letter to Winchendon Residents

The final Proposition 2-1/2 Override Information Meetings was held Wednesday evening at Town Hall. This was the last of 11 such meetings held throughout Winchendon by the Town Manager and Town Department Heads to provide information and answer questions from the residents. Having attended nine of the 11 sessions, I came away with a few observations.

First, at some of the beginning meetings I sensed a few more raised voices, confrontational approaches in the discussions. This is totally understandable as this issue is critically important to all, whichever side you are on. However, during the last three sessions I attended, there was focused listening, and a relaxed, respectful, give and take, discussion between the town representatives and the residents. Upon leaving the lengthy final meeting on Wednesday, I couldn’t help but notice the number of residents, both for and against the override, staying behind and having in-depth chats with the Town Manager, Department Heads, and School Superintendent. This is a WIN for all of us.

Second, I want to try and paraphrase a story that was told toward the end of Wednesday’s meeting. When asked about an override vote held during his childhood in his hometown, the Superintendent of Schools recounted how the override (similar to the one facing Winchendon voters) went down in defeat. It devastated his community and the future of that town…something that took the town almost 40 years to recover from. He concluded by saying that Monday (Election Day) is just one day, but that the decision you make on that ONE day can have repercussions for generations. Something to think about.

Third, at the Ipswich Drive information session, resident David Connor, recounted the gifts to our town by well-known benefactors - Mr. Beals, who gave us our beautiful Library; Mr. Murdock, who gifted us the High School (now our Senior Center); and, today, the Robinson-Broadhurst Foundation which has given many, many millions of dollars over the years to all departments of our town government, our schools, our non-profit organizations, and the list goes on…most significantly, a $3 Million+ gift for the construction of the Amphitheater at our Winchendon Park.

These benefactors did not give these impressive gifts to our Selectmen or Town Manager, they were entrusted to each resident of this town, young and old, to help provide all of us a better quality of life…to give us the things we could never afford on our own.

I don’t think any of us can make those kinds of gifts today, I know I can’t. What we can do is give this vote on Monday, May 5, some serious thought, and then vote YES on the Override Question(s). If you feel you can support the $1.9 million question only, just vote YES on that question. If you can support the $2.9 million question, vote yes on that question as well as the $1.9 question, as they are not combinable. The historic gifts of Beals, Murdock, and Robinson-Broadhurst made a difference. Your vote of support on the override will help keep that quality of life alive for all of us.

Thank You.

Rick Ward,
Winchendon Resident

Marcia McDonald

MARCIA McDONALD
April 15, 1948 ~ April 25, 2025 (Age 77)

Marcia Kathleen McDonald passed from this life on April 26, 2025.

The world dimmed a bit when her light went out.

Marcia was born on April 15, 1948. She showed a talent for the arts at an early age. After graduating from Murdock High School in 1966, she attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts. Upon receiving her bachelor degree and a subsequent teaching degree, Marcia returned to Winchendon teaching the arts to the towns school children. She also mentored the older students in the town’s popular Tournament of Plays. After many years, Marcia left Winchendon to further her education at Brandeis University where she received a Masters in Theater Arts.

Her career in theater began at the Boston Opera Company working in set, stage and costume design. She soon moved to New York City and began a career as a costume designer, working on shows both on and off Broadway as well as Shakespeare in the Park performances. Though Marcia loved her time in New York she never forgot her love of teaching. She accepted a position at Illinois Weslyan University teaching design in their Theater Arts Program. After a long and satisfying career, Marcia retired as a tenured Professor of Costume Design.

Marcia loved the arts, the beauty created by our hands through which our souls could shine. Marcia loved her students of all ages. She sought to touch the core inside us all that allows our talents to blossom and soar. Marcia loved her family above all. She was a devoted daughter, wonderful sister and the best of fun aunt. Marcia’s love of animals, particularly dogs, cannot go unacknowledged. She supported several charities, helping to ease the pain of abuse and abandonment suffered by these poor animals. She shared her life with several well loved pets.

Marcia was preceded in death by her beloved parents Robert V. McDonald and Florence R. (Wick) McDonald. She leaves her siblings Maureen Cote (David), Melanie Maxwell (Earle), Mary Dirrane (Brian), Robert McDonald (David), and Mona Riberdy (Richard ). Marcia also leaves many nieces and nephews , each so dear to her heart. And she leaves her little dog Thimby, who misses his Mom very much.

The world is indeed darker without Marcia. She was a singular light in the lives of her family, friends and students.

In lieu of flowers the family asks you to please consider a donation to Massachusetts Animal Coalition (http://massanimalcoalition.org) or 15/10 Foundation (15outof10.org)

Visitation will be Tuesday May 6th 5-7 pm at Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central St. Winchendon, Mass. A private burial for family will be held the following day at Cavalry Cemetery in Winchendon.
