Winchendon Notice Board

Take the TOY TOWN TROLLEY On Saturdays Beginning January 11! FREE!

Beginning on Saturday, January 11, the Toy Town Trolley will be making three circuits around Winchendon and up to the Rindge shopping areas every Saturday. Rides are FREE to all residents! This service is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and sponsored by the Town of Winchendon, the Winchendon CAC, the Winchendon Council on Aging and the Winchendon CCAP Task Force.

NOTE: ORIGINAL SCHEDULE HAS CHANGED. Each circuit will start at Hyde Park and stop at the end of Pearl Drive, the Town Hall bus shelter, Dollar Tree Plaza, the YMCA/GFA bus shelter, CVS, the fire station bus shelter, Ipswich Drive, the end of Ready Drive, the end of Goodrich Drive and the Winchendon Community Park. From there the trolley will head up 202 (so you don't have to!) and stop to let off shoppers at Tractor Supply, Market Basket/Marshalls, Walmart and Hannaford. It then returns to Not Just Produced and Sippin' Serendipity and immediately starts its next circuit with Hyde Park. Shoppers who were let off on the first through fourth circuits can reboard the trolley for home when it returns.

The first circuit starts at Hyde Park at 9:15 a.m. and the last circuit leaves Hannaford at 2:51 p.m.

For a grid of the complete updated schedule with times, see https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1E0NiGrFeB_wtjV61TCosVYm0p5g4dKQ6vExvOrI9288/htmlview. "WHERE THERE'S A NEED, THERE IS A LION"

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

As our little town once again faces the need for a Prop 2-1/2 override, I am filled with a mix of frustration and sadness.

I am frustrated to see that my neighbors are once again caught between a rock and a hard place. We are being asked to shoulder the economic burden of keeping our local library and senior center open, supporting our schools and maintaining our police and fire protections. Many of us are seniors, many are working families struggling to make ends meet.

It isn't fair.

It is incredibly sad to see my neighbors being torn apart by competing needs. Nobody wants to deny the kids a decent education or close the library, but financial reality is such that a lot of people here are afraid of higher taxes.

The cost of everything is rising by far more than 2-1/2 percent a year. Health insurance rates are rising by 20-25% annually. Inflation is between 3 and 4%. Energy costs are soaring.

So how is our town supposed to keep buildings heated, provide insurance to our workers, and provide for our kids and seniors, all while keeping tax increases below 2-1/2 percent? We are a rural town with some wonderful small businesses, but our income rests almost exclusively on property taxes.

We are only one small town, but we are hardly alone in facing drastic cuts to vital services unless we override Prop 2-1/2 this year. Other small towns, like Harvard, Belchertown and Spencer are also in this predicament. More surprisingly, many bigger, wealthier towns are also in need of Prop 2-1/2 overrides. Milton, Winchester and Amherst all come to mind, but there are others.

I strongly support the passage of the Prop 2-1/2 override for Winchendon. Our schools having been struggling for decades; we cannot absorb any more cuts. Our library and senior center are vital to the social, emotional and intellectual health of our community. To lose either would further damage our chances of attracting more businesses.

In my humble opinion, as a retiree, we have to approve this painful budget move.

But going forward, we need to turn our combined anger toward the state and federal governments, both of which must do more to help citizens like us.

Proposition 2-1/2 may have had it's uses, but it is pitifully outdated in today's world. It is past time for it to be removed.
