What makes Winchendon what it is...How we're making Winchendon even better

This Week's Winchendon News

Saturday Festivals Aren't Stopped by Cool Rainy Weather

For many years before Founders Day launched in 2023, Winchendon's biggest summer celebration took place the third weekend of June, when the Clark Memorial YMCA's Summer Solstice Fair (sponsored by Athol Savings Bank), the Unitarian Universalist Church of Winchendon's Summer Lawn Fair and Immaculate Heart of Mary Church's Strawberry Festival all were held at the same time. Winchendon residents and visitors could spend a full day visiting vendors and tables set up by local organizations, listening to live music, and enjoying food--even if they didn't work the calories off in the Clark's 5K road race to start the day. At 11:00 a.m. the Clark would hold a parade with town groups and businesses taking part, marching from the Fire Station to Blair Square. All of Central Street would be lined with lawn chairs and people standing along the curb to cheer the marchers and catch swag and treats tossed to the crowd.

In the last five years, the COVID shutdowns and a couple of very rainy weekends put a crimp into these annual events, with the parade cancelled several times, and vendors moved inside or under large tents. Winchendon has been missing its midsummer main street tradition, and Founders Day at the Community Park just isn't the same.

So, even though Saturday morning, June 14 started out chilly and wet, with light rain falling, none of the scheduled events was cancelled. Over at the Clark, two full rows of vendors and organizations set up tables and tents. Multiple enormous "bounce house" attractions were inflated on the field. The CAC/Youth Changemakers/Kiwanis food tent stretched out in front of the field house, selling drinks, snacks, freshly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and other menu items. All proceeds went to benefit the Kiwanis club and programs and services at the CAC Community Hub. The food tent also had some donated fresh local produce to give away free to anyone who wanted it. Other food trucks offered ice cream treats. The outdoor flatbed stage for musicians was ready for its live performers.

Best of all, the parade marched down Central Street right on time. By then, the intermittent sprinkles and showers had given up and the street was lined with families venturing out to see the parade and explore the vendors and activities. Marchers included veterans and the American Legion Auxiliary, Scouts and school sports teams, the National Champion Cheerleaders with their trophies held high, Murdock Farm with one of their new baby calves on a flatbed trailer, tow trucks from Brooks Automotive, members of the Board of Selectmen, and many more.

The UUCW Lawn Fair was packed with vendors and tents, including the Winchendon Garden Club's annual array of raffle baskets, and local crafters, some old-timers and some new this year. A food truck was vending burgers, fries, fried dough and other favorite fair treats, while UUCW ran its traditional hot dog concession. Winchendon Winds held a rehearsal inside the church sanctuary during the afternoon, and some visitors were drawn inside the open sanctuary doors by the exciting chords of John Williams' "Star Wars" score.

The Strawberry Festival was busy. Its ticketed BBQ dinner on Friday night pre-sold 300 tickets, and the church's large outdoor tent kept attendees dry for food sales, raffle ticket sales and live music performances on Saturday.

The largest number of visitors strolled through all three locations between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., a slightly later peak to the "traffic pattern" than the usual year. Most of the vendors at UUCW's Lawn Fair stayed open an hour past the posted end time of 2:00 p.m. because it was still very busy.

New traditions like Founders Day are welcome, but Winchendon loves its tried and true old favorites, as well. Thanks to all the residents and visitors who grabbed an umbrella or rain cape and defied the showers to support their town, and many, many thanks to the Clark YMCA, Athol Savings Bank, UUCW, IMH Church, and all the sponsors and volunteers who work together to make it all happen.

Winchendon Winds continues its three-concert series this Sunday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at their host venue, the Unitarian Universalist Church, 126 Central Street. Conductor Dr. Lindsay Bronnenkant, UMass Amherst music faculty, leads this 40-piece professional wind ensemble in a delightful selection of tunes based here and abroad.

Concertgoers will "travel" with the band to various musical destinations. They'll hear jaunty sailor songs on the high seas, Cajun folk songs of the Deep South, the heartfelt Finlandia, a Spanish march, the desert themes from Lawrence of Arabia and close with four rousing and technically brilliant Scottish dances.

Word is spreading--over 100 attended last weekend's opener. As one concertgoer remarked, "This music sounds amazing in this epic space! It's dramatic and relaxing at the same time."

Concerts are free, thanks to multiple grants and donations, including the Robinson-Broadhurst Foundation and the Winchendon Cultural Council. Refreshments will be sold on the lawn before and during the concert. Bring the whole family to an enjoyable afternoon of live music, right in downtown Winchendon.

Winchendon Named One of "10 Quirkiest Massachusetts Towns to Visit in 2025" by World Atlas

The website WorldAtlas.com has named Winchendon one of the top 10 "quirkiest" (in a good way) towns in Massachusetts for day-trippers and vacationers to visit in 2025. "Massachusetts has its share of stately commons and postcard-perfect towns, but skip Boston and some of the biggest tourist traps in America, and you'll find that this state starts to get quirky," the piece begins. Winchendon joins such better-known and less surprising honorees as Salem, Concord, Sturbridge and Shelburne Falls to make the list.

Adam Bogosh writes, "Winchendon doesn't just have a small-town vibe; it has a giant rocking horse. Clyde, the 12-foot-tall wooden horse standing near the Winchendon History and Cultural Center, is a nod to the town's 19th-century nickname: "Toy Town." That same center also features rotating exhibits on local industry and life, including a collection of handcrafted toys from the area's manufacturing heyday. For those who like their antiques with a side of different, Toy Town Stained Glass and Antiques offers everything from secondhand tools to custom-made windows. This Massachusetts town has something for outdoor lovers, though it's not nearly as quirky. Lake Dennison Recreation Area, just west of town, has hiking trails, swimming spots, and campsites across over 121 acres of land."

Blais, Comerford to Hold Discussion and Briefing on Rural Schools Bill

On Wednesday, June 25, Representative Natalie Blais (D-Deerfield) and Senator Jo Comerford (D-Northampton) will host a hybrid event to highlight the critical need to pass An Act providing a sustainable future for rural schools (H.517 / S.314) in the 194th legislative session. This event will feature a discussion with school administrators, school committee members, students, and municipal officials on how this legislation would support their schools and communities.

The discussion will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be in Room 428 of the Massachusetts State House at 24 Beacon Street, Boston, and on Zoom. To register for the Zoom link, go to https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd3NZUk9QulTW9La-8xiKiuR-OdAmbDDFoxsx1pTG_IOGIiRw/viewform.

Participating will be Representative Natalie Blais, 1st Franklin district; Senator Jo Comerford, Hampshire, Franklin, Worcester district; Noah Berger, Director of Center for Education Policy and Practice, MTA; Naomi Bledsoe, Franklin Regional Council of Governments; Amelia Durbin, Student at Northampton High School; Mystic Glenn, Student at Pioneer Valley Regional School District; Sarah Reynolds, Town Administrator for the Town of Charlemont; Kristen Smidy, Gateway Regional Schools Superintendent; Martha Thurber, Chair of the Mohawk Trail Regional School Committee.

Rural school districts in Massachusetts face unique and long-standing fiscal challenges. The Student Opportunity Act of 2019 acknowledged the need for the state to examine this area in further detail and established the Commission on the Long-term Fiscal Health of Rural School Districts for that purpose.

This omnibus bill filed by Blais and Comerford builds on the commission's 36 recommendations, serves as a continuation of the work of the Student Opportunity Act, and ensures that students in every corner of the Commonwealth receive the resources and opportunity they deserve.

"The Reluctant Dragon" at Toy Town Elementary Packs the House

Toy Town Elementary students, staff, parents and volunteers put on an amazing production of "The Reluctant Dragon" last weekend, with costumes as good as I've seen in any children's theatre production anywhere, including Andy's Summer Playhouse and one or two shows where I worked on costumes myself. The auditorium was nearly SRO on Friday night.

WPS posted on Facebook, "Great turnout for the first night of "The Reluctant Dragon" at Toy Town Elementary! Huge shout out to Ms. Darcy, Mr. Orsini and Ms. Laserte for the hours they put in after school to make this production happen! Of course, it couldn't have happened without all the kids that stayed after, worked together, and memorized their lines and out on a fantastic show! You should all be very proud of yourselves!"

Below are a few photos--remember these faces, we'll be seeing some of them onstage at the high school in a couple more years. I can't wait!
