Winchendon Receives T-Mobile Hometown Grant to Complete Final Phase of The HUB, a Youth-Led Community Center Powered by the Winchendon CAC

Winchendon, MA -- The Winchendon Community Action Committee(CAC) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $50,000 T-Mobile Hometown Grant--one of only 25 communities selected nationwide in this round and the only recipient in Massachusetts.

This competitive grant will fund the final remodel phase of The HUB, Winchendon's vibrant community center operated by the CAC. Housed in a repurposed former bowling alley, The HUB is home to the local food pantry, a youth workforce development program, the Sunshine Café, the Local Makers Hub, a social service center, and, of course, open bowling. The HUB serves as a central gathering place for all ages and a powerful symbol of community-led revitalization.

The awarded funding will support:

  • A new ADA-accessible indoor/outdoor classroom, expanding access to educational workshops, community events, and youth programming year-round.
  • A youth-designed public mural initiative, celebrating Winchendon's identity and creative spirit through bold, inclusive artwork.
Community members are invited to celebrate this exciting milestone at a check presentation ceremony during Winchendon's Annual Food Truck Festival on Saturday, June 28 at 12:30 p.m. at G.A.R Park (52 Murdock Ave). The event will include remarks from town leaders, youth representatives, and project partners, along with a preview of the project vision.

"We're honored that Winchendon has been selected as a T-Mobile Hometown Grant recipient," said Andrew Beauvais, Chair of the Winchendon Board of Selectmen. "This investment in The HUB strengthens our commitment to youth empowerment, economic development, and community wellness. The new ADA-accessible classroom and community murals will expand access and celebrate the creative spirit of our town. It's a proud day for Toy Town and a meaningful step toward a brighter future for all who call it home."

Town Manager Bill McKinney added: "The Town of Winchendon is honored and excited that one of our local non-profits has received a T-Mobile grant. This project will provide a flexible, accessible venue for educational workshops, social services, and community events--and contribute to creative placemaking that sets the tone for future public art and infrastructure projects."

"T-Mobile's grant is helping us make The HUB a place that truly brings people together," said Nikolaus Brauer-Chagnon, Youth Changemaker Director and high school student. "We'll have more space to host events, connect with the community, and celebrate our town. The mural will help us show off our pride in Winchendon. Thank you, T-Mobile, for helping us make the world a better place--one step at a time."

Since its launch in 2021, the T-Mobile Hometown Grants program has committed $25 million over five years to support small-town revitalization projects across the country. The program is administered in partnership with Main Street America and Smart Growth America, and it prioritizes projects that demonstrate strong local leadership and long-term community impact.

Winchendon Winds Closes Season with 10th Anniversary "Organ" Concert Featuring Guest Artist Peter Krasinski

Winchendon Winds 2025 concert

Winchendon Winds concludes their 2025 concert series this Sunday, June 29, 2:00 p.m. at their host venue, the Unitarian Universalist Church, 126 Central Street. "Win Winds" will bring together woodwinds, percussion, pipe organ and grand piano as they celebrate ten years of music-making in their hometown of Winchendon. Conductor Dr. Lindsay Bronnenkant, UMass Amherst music faculty, leads this 40-piece professional wind ensemble in the season finale.

The band will "pull out all the stops," quite literally, with a concert featuring the church's 1868 E. & G.G. Hook pipe organ. True pipe organs like this one are a vanishing breed due to their upkeep and skill required to play. Their wind-blown sound presents a unique listening experience. Many old pipe organs have been converted to electronic keyboards, and most of today's modern organs are electronic. The UU Church pipe organ has been in continuous play since its installation 157 years ago.

Guest artist and international pipe organist Peter Krasinski joins the band for this remarkable concert. He will showcase the colors of the organ and its foot pedal sounds with a solo rendition of a Bach Toccata in C Major, BWV 564. He'll also perform with the band on Tarot, King of Cups (an original work by Dr. Bronnenkant), Phantom of the Opera, and the bombastic finale to Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 ("Organ Symphony").

Mr. Krasinski is broadly recognized as a motivating consultant for the pipe organ community, and as a conductor, organist and music educator, whose imaginative and energetic performances elevate and inform audiences. Along with regular concert appearances he specializes in live improvised silent film accompaniment. He has premiered the art in major venues in North America, Europe, and Asia including the Stone Church in Gilbertville, MA. He is the recipient of several prizes including the First Prize in Improvisation from the American Guild of Organists National Competition.

Past Dean of the Boston Chapter AGO, Mr. Krasinski is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and is credited as organist and choir leader in the 2023 film The Holdovers. He is Principal Organist at Mechanics Hall, Worcester, House Organist of the Providence Performing Arts Center, Organist at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Mission Church, Boston, Organist at First Church of Christ, Scientist in Providence RI, and accompanist at Beth El Temple Center in Belmont, MA. He holds both a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and Organ Performance, and the Master of Sacred Music Degree from Boston University.

Several beloved tunes round out Sunday's program. Win Winds will play arrangements of Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro overture, and Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry, also known as "Danny Boy."

Admission is free, thanks to multiple grants and donations, including the Robinson-Broadhurst Foundation and the Winchendon Cultural Council. Refreshments will be sold before and during the concert, and there will be a cake reception following the concert on the front lawn.

Senator Comerford Secures Hoped-For Earmark for Winchendon Public Schools to Fund School Building Repair Feasibility Study

On Tuesday, June 24, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed into law H.4227, An Act making appropriations for the fiscal year 2025 to provide for supplementing certain existing appropriations and for certain other activities and projects, which appropriates excess Fair Share amendment revenue. This one-time revenue amount comes from the so-called "Millionaires' Tax" in the state. Senator Jo Comerford (D-Northampton), who represents Winchendon, is Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and served on the committee that reconciled the House and Senate versions of the bill. She secured $750,000 in direct earmarks for her district, including $200,000 for Winchendon.

The earmark will pay for a feasibility study and schematic designs for repairs to windows, roofs and doors at Toy Town Elementary and Memorial Elementary, and potential replacement of the roof at Murdock Middle High School. This is the first step in what will be a multi-year process, in which the Winchendon Public Schools will work with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and may be eligible for reimbursement of up to 77.5 percent of costs.

The article as presented in the Town Meeting Warrant (Article 21) evoked considerable discussion among the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee and School Committee because as written, it did not include a dollar amount. In a joint meeting of the Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen on April 29, 2025 going through the 2025 draft Town Meeting warrant, FinCom member Dr. Maureen Ward raised objections to this, saying that without a dollar amount, the town would be approving "a blank check." Town Manager Bill McKinney explained that the MSBA dictated the exact wording of the article, and it had been vetted by town counsel. The dollar amount would be given in the motion on Town Meeting floor.

Board members were also concerned about the fact that the earmark was not a certainty. According to School Committee Chair Karen Kast, Sen. Comerford was "fairly confident," while state Representatives Jon Zlotnik and Susannah Whipps felt that the town was "a little late on getting earmarks for the town" in this year's budget process.

Member of the Board of Selectmen Erika Eitland said, "If we are to accept this money from MSBA, they will reimburse us up to 77.5 percent. The most that they can reimburse is 80 percent so we are getting the most we possibly can from the state on that project. And I think one thing that we talked about as a Board yesterday was the fact that if we have to get a new school, something happens to these existing schools, we don't have the budget for them. To me, this $200,000 that we're talking about becomes an easier pill to swallow if the earmarks come through. The world is very uncertain. If that isn't the case, though, it is still a pretty good deal for this town in terms of its being more proactive than reactive. Because we know what happened with the boiler in the past and the consequences of that. So the fact that roofs, windows, doors, those are things that just help secure those buildings for a longer lifetime."

Ms. Kast continued that after the feasibility study, the schematic design "takes a good two years." It wasn't as though the schools would be coming back next year asking for a huge appropriation for the repair work. The town and school district would have a lot of time to find other funding sources, and meanwhile the town's overall financial status could be improved.

At Annual Town Meeting on Monday, May 19, voters approved Article 21, authorizing the town to seek funding for the feasibility study, by a majority vote of 81 percent in favor, 19 percent opposed. At that time, Ms. Eitland told Town Meeting that Sen. Comerford had gotten the earmark passed in the Senate version of the bill, but it still needed to be passed by the House.

At the School Committee meeting on June 5, 2025, Winchendon Schools Superintendant Dr. Marc Gosselin told the Committee that the MSBA had contacted them to tell them that they have assigned the district its Owner's Project Manager (OPM) and a design firm for these projects. "So, we're moving forward with the process," he said.
