The 2025 Massachusetts Chili Cook-Off, affectionately known as "The Beast of the East," sponsored by the Kiwanis of Winchendon and officially sanctioned by the International Chili Society (ICS) which runs the World Championship Chili Cook-Off, assembled at the Winchendon Community Park on Saturday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Kiwanis may have broken the "Saturday rain curse" this year and run the first Saturday event to enjoy perfect weather and not a single drop of rain.

Close to a dozen contestants set up booths around the grassy field next to the amphitheater, festooned with chili-themed banners, tablecloths and swags, large banners with their company or brand names, and decorations. Cooks and their teams dished out small tasting cups of chili, with many also offering snacks, condiments, and extras. Attendees voted for their favorites by dropping a "tip"--a quarter--into a container at the booth. Meanwhile, the official panel of judges at the judging tent tried each chili and conferred with clipboards of chili rubric for assessing the cooks' creations.

As the event ran for quite a long time, there was a steady flow of residents going in and out. The "gate" was a canopy tent with tables and volunteers from the Kiwanis, collecting the $5 entrance fee for adults (kids 12 and under got in free), and handing out information on the "People's Choice" voting procedure, brochures about the Kiwanis and their programs, and coupons for a free can of Bush beans (Bush being a sponsor of ICS).

Bands Robbie B and Wylie and The Boogiemen played from the amphitheater stage during the day. With the bright, strong summer sun, many attendees were listening from the shady areas to the sides of the amphitheater tiers, where picnic tables are set up for park visitors. Along with the chili cooks, several local makers and vendors had booths set up, and an ice cream truck was vending welcome "chasers" to the mouth-warming spicy cuisine. The CAC and Youth Changemakers ran a beverage concession, while the Kiwanis Famous Food Tent sold hamburgers, hot dogs and other lunch food.

The Courier spoke to a couple of the teams vying for Saturday's top award.

Michael Allsup, of Fire Belly Chili from Loudon, NH, has already been a state champion in several events. The Courier asked him how he and his wife Jessica got started. "I had it as a bucket list item, enter a chili cook-off," he said. "That was one of the things. And I went against like 80 people in Henniker, and I got third place off the bat with the family recipe. And I was like, that was fun. Very cool. People were great. I love all of the people who come to visit. And I was like, yeah, maybe we could go and do another one. And now it's been eight years."

He won his first champhionship in 2023. "The very first ICS Cook-Off we ever went to was here in Winchendon. The field over there [by the Clark YMCA], and we got fifth place there." Fire Belly has been at every Winchendon Cook-Off, since 2017.

Asked where his brand name came from, Mr. Allsup said, "We like dragons. It's like you get that fire in your belly. You're competitive. You want to go out and try your hardest. And it just seemed to fit, honestly, the fire belly and the flavor of the chili too, to bring the fire in our chili, the heat."

Fire Belly also competes in the World Champhionships, and went to Myrtle Beach last year, and will be in Indianapolis this year and next year.

Asked how he thought things went today, Mr. Allsup said, "It's a great turnout. It's a great crowd. Everybody wants to talk about recipes, and I don't know if you can see, but we're cooking a recipe for an old World Champion who passed away last year. So it's his recipe. Everybody was really happy. And it's kind of like, in a way, he's still with us."

Jessica Allsup added, "Winchendon is a fantastic community. The Kiwanis, they do such a great job putting this event on every single year. So we're really happy to be here and help support them, too." Accompanying Michael and Jessica was their very young daughter, the next generation of chili chefs getting an early start!

Roxanne Ballachino of Baboo's Breath, from Manchester, CT, echoed the Allsups' warm feelings about Winchendon's event. "All I can say is, this is an amazing event," she said. "This is my, I don't know, sixth, seventh, eighth year here. And the people are always the nicest of any chili cook-off that I go to. Bruce runs an amazing program. The Kiwanis do an amazing job. It's always a pleasure to come back. And I only do three or four cook-offs a year, and I make sure I don't miss this one."

Ms. Ballachino said her brand's catchy name had a simple origin: "I had to come up with a name when I registered for my first competition, and that was the first thing that came to my mind. It's all about my dog."

Asked how she got started, Ms. Ballachino said, "I'm from Connecticut, and there was quite a large cook-off in Connecticut. I worked at a technical high school in the culinary department. I got a call from the gentleman who organized that one looking for youth to cook. So he's talking, talking, talking. I'm like, the heck with the kids, I want to cook. The first two years, I cooked with my kids from school, my students. And from that, it just went on. I just wanted to do it more and more."

Asked how the day had gone, Ms. Ballachino said it had been very busy, her partner, Laurie, "hasn't had a chance to sit down for more than three minutes."

Attendees expressed similar enthusiasm for Winchendon's Cook-Off event.

Winchendon resident and chili fan Jill Sackett told the Courier, "It was a great day. Nice variety of chili. I was impressed with them. All the vendors were super friendly, and there were even two vegetarian options. Everything ranged--there were sweet, sweet and barbecue, savory, very savory choices, different types of beans, different types of chilies. It was a very enjoyable day, taste testing, going through and getting little flights of chili and trying them all out."

Asked if this was her first Chili Cook-Off, Ms. Sackett said, "No, I had been to one or two others years before, but there has been a gap of time since I had gone, and I was looking forward to getting back to them. And this is one of the big ones. This is one of the best kept secrets in Winchendon, that we managed to get to host a state chili cook-off here in Winchendon. And, you know, the place is just not overrun with people. It should be. It's a fun time. It's delicious food and and a good cause. You know, it helps the Kiwanis."

"It was a gorgeous day, and as a former resident of the Southwest, I was ready to be extra-critical of the cook-off contestants," Winchendon resident Dani Cutler said. "I was pleasantly surprised over and over. So many tasty (and spicy!) entries, it was difficult to decide who would get most of my quarters.

"In-between taste-testing we sat in the amphitheater and were entertained by excellent blues music. A perfect day. Any larger events in the North-central MA area need to utilize our Community Park. It's a perfect multi-use facility."

Winchendon Kiwanis member and event organizer Cailte Kelley said via email to the Courier, "I'd like to thank the Town of Winchendon and all its departments for coming together to support this annual event. The Winchendon Community Park is such an amazing location and it makes our entire club proud to have been able to show it off to attendees from as close as across the street to as far as New York, New Jersey, Maine and all points in between. We'd also like to thank the tremendous partnership of the Winchendon CAC and the Youth Changemakers. Kiwanis of Winchendon is turning 100 years old and we can't pull these events off without our members, both past and present so if you're looking for a way to be involved with the community, we'd be honored to have you. We're already planning next years event!"

Mr. Kelley also said there were 478 paid admissions for the event. The winning contestants were:

People's Choice: Dan Parmenter, Winchendon
Homestyle: Mario Saccoccio, Ohio
Chili Verde, green: Justin Martinek
Veggie: Michael Allsup, Fire Belly, Milton, New Hampshire
Red Chili: Kurt Leithner, Dirty Kurty, New Jersey

Congratulations to all the winners!

U.S. Army Veteran to Receive Free Roof Installation from Red Dog's Roofing

Winchendon Homeowner Honored Through 2025 Roof Giveaway Program

WINCHENDON, MA - Red Dog's Roofing is proud to announce that Rich and Judy Uguccioni, residents of Winchendon, MA, have been selected to receive a brand-new roof at no cost as part of the company's annual Roof Giveaway Program. The installation is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 8, 2025, at their home on 51 Harrisville Circle.

Rich Uguccioni is a U.S. Army veteran whose life has been marked by quiet dedication and service. The child of a military family, Rich grew up traveling internationally and enlisted in the U.S. Army while living in Germany. He completed basic training in Texas and served for four years in the lead-up to Operation Desert Storm.

The nomination was submitted by Rich's wife, Judy, whose heartfelt letter captured the spirit of the program.

"I am nominating my husband as we do need a new roof and he is such a hard-working man who never expects anything from anyone," Judy wrote. "He paid for both of our kids to go to college so they wouldn't have to worry about debt. He needs knee replacements but refuses to take the time for himself. He does everything for everyone else, I would just love to see his face if he won."

The Uguccioni family's existing roof is over 25 years old, with deteriorating shingles and visible damage.

"This is exactly what the Roof Giveaway is about," said Patrick Cochran, Founder and CEO of Red Dog's Roofing. "We're not just putting on a roof--we're honoring someone who's spent a lifetime giving to his family, his community, and his country."

All labor for the project will be donated by Red Dog's Roofing. Owens Corning and SRS distribution donated the materials.

The Roof Giveaway is part of Red Dog's ongoing mission to support those who serve and uplift the communities where they work. The company remains committed to giving back--not just through craftsmanship, but through compassion.

To learn more about the Roof Giveaway Program and other community initiatives, visit www.reddogsroofing.com.

Red Dog's Roofing is a family-owned and operated company serving Massachusetts and Florida. With a focus on craftsmanship, care, and community, Red Dog's Roofing delivers top-tier roofing solutions while giving back to those who make our neighborhoods strong.
