DPW Will be Tidying Up Cemeteries

(September 11, 2025) -- The Department of Public Works (DPW) will begin removing any decorations, objects, or plantings that extend beyond the permitted space around cemetery monuments. Families and loved ones are encouraged to collect any items they wish to keep within the next month.

After this period, the DPW will temporarily place removed items outside the cemetery for an additional month to allow for retrieval. Any items not collected by the end of that time will be respectfully discarded.

This policy is necessary to ensure the safety of cemetery staff and visitors, maintain accessibility, and preserve the dignity of the grounds. We appreciate the community's cooperation in helping to keep the cemetery a safe and respectful place for all.

    Evan J Mahoney

    EVAN J MAHONEY
    December 2, 2003 ~ October 3, 2025 (Age 21)

Evan Josiah Mahoney, born on December 02, 2003, and who was a 2022 graduate of Oakmont Regional High School and some college at Mount Wachusett Community College, was taken from us suddenly on October 3rd, 2025 at the age of 21. Beloved son of Valerie (Geldart) Mahoney and Patrick Mahoney and loving brother to siblings James and Elizabeth of Ashburnham. Evan was an adventurous and outgoing young man, living each and every day of his life to the fullest.

Evan started his work career during the covid-19 shutdown while he was still a student in high school. He worked at McDonald's in Gardner and Winchendon and met some of his current friends there as well as the love of his life, Alexis Burke. He later moved on to become an Amazon Driver out of Littleton, Ma., and he held that position up to his final day. It was hard work, but he loved his job and the open road that his work would have him travel.

His relationship with family and friends would consume his heart as he was always spending time with us. He took on a special role in our family when he agreed to become his older sister Elizabeth's Legal Guardian, as she suffers from autism and even expressed interest to look after his older brother James, with a milder form of autism as well, in regards to, if anything happened to us, his parents. Growing up, Evan had a tremendous love for wheels, which started at an early age, with skateboards to bicycles and advanced to cars and motorcycles. He spent many hours in the driveway of our family home washing his car and servicing his motorcycles with his friends before going on rides with them. He also loved spending time at Ripple Beach swimming, fishing and canoeing. At night, the smell of barbeque and large bonfires in the backyard would light up the night, as he would spend time by the fire with his friends and family.

He loved going out to eat with his friends at various favorite restaurants and used Uber Eats often at home, as he was very familiar with using, since he worked as an Uber Eats Driver prior to his last job. He has gone on long road trips, sometimes out of state, with his friends and girlfriend Lexi, the love of his life. The history and love they shared during their courtship was something to behold. From trips to local card game shops for tournaments and trading with his brother James and friends, to amusement parks big and small, to concerts and to the memorials and monuments of Washington DC, everywhere he went, he would always come back with a new story to tell and yet another picture for the books.

At home, Evan was an avid gamer, active on Steam and Nintendo consoles with his brother James and making a name for himself in Team Fortress 2, his favorite first-person shooter. He was a dedicated Soldier player, whose "rocket jumping" skills allowed him to soar across the battlefield with ease and get the drop on anyone who saw him flying overhead.

Evan always had a great love for animals even at an early age. He loved Sonic the Hedgehog when he was little and would often tell me he wanted one as a pet. He never got his pet hedgehog but he did adore our family dogs and cats throughout the years. The cat, Gray Boy, who predeceased Evan by two months, Evan had a special bond with. He was the one who named him. They would seek out each other daily to play and spend time with each other, romping around the backyard with much laughter and purrs shared between them. He also enjoyed coparenting with his girlfriend, three guinea pigs, Moo Moo, Ducky, and Peanut.

Evan recently experienced a new spiritual awakening following a friend's motorcycle accident that took place on our street just six months to the day of Evan's passing. Evan, his girlfriend and other friends recently started to attend church more, following their friend's miraculous recovery. Evan, also recently discussed the idea of a rededication baptism which he wanted to do with his girlfriend Lexi and brother James.

Evan was predeceased by his grandfather Daniel Mahoney Sr., his grandparents Ross and Jean Geldart and his Uncle Ross Jr. Evan is survived by his parents, Patrick Mahoney and Valerie (Geldart) Mahoney, his siblings James and Elizabeth, his grandmother Angeline Mahoney and Charlie Shadows. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles Gregory Geldart and his wife Kimberly, Daniel Mahoney and his wife Joanne, Gail Goodnough and her husband Daniel, Susan Cloutier, and Timothy Mahoney and Sally Felix, as well as many cousins, friends and his precious girlfriend Alexis Burke.

Evan's life is a testament to the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "It is not length of life, but depth of life." His spirit went to his Heavenly Father but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. We invite you to leave your memories of Evan, and upload photos to his memorial page at Mack Family Funeral Homes, Gardner - Chapel, 105 Central Street, Gardner, MA.

A Memorial Service to honor Evan Mahoney's life will be held at Horizon Christian Fellowship, 356 Broad Street, Fitchburg on Friday October 24th at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. An Interment will follow at St. Denis Cemetery at 91 Kelton Road., Ashburnham, Ma., 01430.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Arc of Opportunity, a cause near and dear to Evan's heart at; https//www.arcofopportunity.org.
