April Movies at the Beals Memorial Library

If April showers are keeping you indoors, why not pass the time with a good movie? Each month, the Beals Memorial Library in Winchendon hosts a few indoor film events, showing movies new and old, fit for varying ages. Here's what's playing this month:

On Saturday, April 23, at 11:00 a.m., the library will be showing Sing 2 (rated PG) for this month's Family Matinee. Featuring the vocal talents of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, and Scarlett Johansson, this fun animated film reunites audiences with the charming koala, Buster Moon, and his musical friends as they try and convince a reclusive rock star to join their new show.

Finally, on Wednesday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m., join the library for this month's Classic Movie Matinee, where they'll be screening the 1976 film, Network (rated R), starring Faye Dunaway, William Holden, and Peter Finch. In this dark comedy, a fictional television network struggling with poor ratings exploits their deranged former news anchor until things escalate out of their control.

All movie screenings at the library are free and open to the public. Bring some popcorn and come and enjoy the show!

The Beals Memorial Library is located at 50 Pleasant Street in Winchendon. For more information, contact the library at 978-297-0300, email at bealsmemoriallibrary@gmail.com, or visit their website at bealslibrary.org.

Spring Jazz Concert at the Beals Memorial Library

Come to the Beals Memorial Library for an evening of jazz, performed by national and international pianist and recording artist John Arcaro & Band, on Saturday, April 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the library auditorium.

Fans of jazz and piano music are in for a real treat next Saturday when John Arcaro & Band will be performing at the Winchendon library. The concert will feature jazz interpretations of the "Great American Songbook" as well as contemporary jazz compositions. John has performed at major jazz festivals alongside a number of great musicians, including Paquito D'Rivera, Rebecca Parris, Shirley Horn, Maynard Ferguson, and Jack Pezanelli, as well as other shows with performers such as Diahann Carroll, Vic Damone, the Drifters, and the Four Aces.

John has held artist-in-residence status at Centro-Cultural Costariccense Norteamericano in Costa Rica and has also been the pianist for special performances of The Moses Project by composer Walter Robinson with special guest artists Vox One. He is also a Berklee College of Music alumnus and now works as an Assistant Professor there.

When speaking of his musical influences, John has said, "My dad was my first influence as a kid; he played and sang classic standard tunes every night after work. As a child I was always listening, always trying to imitate, and was actually training my ears without knowing it. That shaped my learning style; I'm always processing music by ear."

This musical event is free to attend. Registration is required and seats for the show can be reserved online at www.eventbrite.com/e/307320272207.

This concert is being held in partnership with the Winchendon Music Festival. For more information, contact the library at 978-297-0300 or visit their website at bealslibrary.org.

Winchendon Presents A Celebration of Lives Lost

On May 1,2022 the Town of Winchendon will be the site of a special event: A Musical Celebration of Lives Lost during the COVID pandemic period from early 2020 to the present. Many of those family members and dear friends did not have a funeral or memorial service, or had limited attendance because of COVID restrictions.

Winchendon musician Bob Jordan, in co-operation with the Old Murdock Senior Center will host the event, which begins at 2:00 p.m. at the G.A.R. Park in Winchendon. Residents of Winchendon, Ashburnham, Templeton, Gardner and Royalston are invited to attend and participate. Bob Jordan and musicians Daniel Gay and Torbin Harding will present a varied musical program carefully curated to be, by turns, reflective, nostalgic, sad, uplifting, life-affirming and relevant, including instrumental and vocal numbers. Part of the program will include the reading of names of loved ones lost during these last two years, and residents of the above towns may submit names and photos (to be used in a photo collage) in advance of the event to the Old Murdock Senior Center, 52 Murdock St, Winchendon, MA 01475.

This outdoor event is an effort toward community healing and part of the effort to put this difficult period behind us. This musical celebration is intended to provide some closure for those of us who have been isolated during the pandemic.

In the event of cold or inclement weather, the event will be re-scheduled to Sunday, May 15.

For more informtion, contact Bob Jordan at 508-873-1767.
