Sizer School Student AP Scores a True Achievement

Sizer School's Class of 2022 seniors continue to impress as recently released Advanced Placement (AP) scores from the 2021-2022 school year show high marks in all areas.

"Our students and teachers worked hard throughout the (post-pandemic) year and hit the ball out of the park!" said School Principal Andrew Lay. "We saw scores of 3 and above in each of the courses, including 5's in English Literature."

Sizer School in Fitchburg offered four AP courses this past school year: Human Geography, Computer Science Principles, Environmental Science, and English Literature.

According to AP English teacher and Subject Area Leader Lyn Niemi, this year's student scores are just as much a reflection of personal excellence, as academic.

"The five students who took [AP English Lit] chose to do so after dealing with almost two years of academic (and in some cases personal) turmoil. All five of them showed up on day one, ready to learn and committed to putting forth their best effort," said Niemi. "These scores are a direct reflection of that effort and commitment. Sizer students didn't just pass this exam, they excelled, with four of the five students earning scores high enough to qualify for credit at prestigious private institutions."

Sizer School seniors Mackenzie Pupecki of Leominster and Mae Barlow of Fitchburg received the highest scores possible in English Lit and Human Geography respectively. Seniors Roman Roy and Odette Amoakohene, both of Fitchburg, scored high enough on the English Lit exam to earn credit at Boston College.

Sizer School, a North Central Charter Essential School, is a free public charter school located in Fitchburg serving students in grades seven through twelve from 25 local towns and cities. Sizer's hands-on, project-based approach to education takes place in a community where each student is known personally, challenged intellectually, and actively engaged in their learning.

"These student successes show great work by the teachers who never lost drive, determination, and focus throughout the year," said Lay. "Their efforts drove this success."

Focused on academic excellence, and each student's personal success, Sizer sends graduates into the world who think for themselves, care about themselves and others, and act creatively and responsibly in the world.

"The skills students develop in [AP English Lit] will serve them in many capacities--including but not limited to the college classroom. I am also hopeful that the literary works we read and discussed will leave an indelible mark and create a solid background of understanding upon which they will continue to build," said Niemi.
