Sizer School announces John and Abigail Adams Scholarship winners

This week, Sizer School in Fitchburg, announced that 12 senior students would be recipients of this year's John and Abigail Adams Scholarships.

"That we have such a large percentage of our current seniors being awarded the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, and to have accomplished this during the heart of the COVID pandemic when they sat for the qualifying MCAS test, is testament to their collective hard work, dedication, and resilience," said Sizer School Principal Andrew Lay.

Sizer Schools Class of 2023 is currently 40 students. Small classroom sizes and personalized instruction are core values to the hands-on education provided at Sizer.

"This is certainly a cause for celebration as this scholarship will open doors for many of our students to access a strong education through the Massachusetts University System. As an institution, we could not be more proud of what they have done," added Lay.

This year's winners were: Matthew Amendola of Sterling, Enid (Kipp) Calderon Pabon of Fitchburg, Adam Camerer of Leominster, Paulo Carboni of Leominter, Ryan Deltergo of Fitchburg, Zoey Ellis of Fitchburg, James Geehan of Townsend, Jaiden Killion of Templeton, Ethan Osgood of Fitchburg, Anthony Thayer of Gardner, Elizabeth Waite of Lunenburg and Brody Wolski of Fitchburg.

The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship is a merit-based program that provides a credit toward tuition for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university. This scholarship is based on student scores on the 10th grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test.

According to Sizer's High School Guidance Counselor Roxxanna Kurtz, "The purpose of awarding this scholarship is to inspire students to aim for high achievement for MCAS testing as well as provide financial assistance to families for any college-bound student."

She went on to say students are awarded if they receive a score in the Advanced category on any of the subject areas during any of their high school MCAS testing that they complete or if their combined score falls within the top 25 percent of students in their district.

"We have 12 students who received it this year, which is comparatively more than the year prior. I am beyond ecstatic and proud," said Kurtz. "More than anything, I am happy that it will help ease "some of the financial costs for students who are worried about how to pay their way in college."

Our schools are participating in a federal program available to select schools as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program called Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This means that all students attending Winchendon Public Schools are eligible to receive breakfast and lunch at no charge throughout the 2022-2023 school year and beyond, regardless of family or household income.

The Community Eligibility Provision runs on a four year cycles and is available to all the students regardless of income in all of the public schools in Winchendon. This helps to increase access to healthy school meals and enhances the integrity of the school meal programs, today and in the future.

One of the benefits of CEP, it alleviates the need for families to submit paperwork for their children to receive school meals, increasing access for eligible students who may fail to submit a household application.
