Poitier won huge critical praise for his performance in Lilies of the Field (1963). When traveling African-American handyman Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier) stops by a farm in rural Arizona, he is welcomed by a group of Roman Catholic nuns who have emigrated from Germany. Sidney Poitier won the Best Actor Oscar for the film. He became the first African American to win the Best Actor Oscar.

In The Heat of The Night (1967) was another critical success for Mr. Poitier. The film won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture. The film tells the story of Philadelphia police detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) who is arrested on suspicion of murder by Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), the racist police chief of tiny Sparta, Mississippi. After Tibbs proves not only his own innocence but that of another man, he joins forces with Gillespie to track down the real killer.

Oscar® Nominated & Cannes Grand Prix Winning Film Opens At Jaffrey's Park Theatre on Friday, February 16

"The Zone of Interest" tells the story of the commandant of Auschwitz and the estate and gardens he created for his family next to the death camp

JAFFREY, New Hampshire (February 12, 2024) The powerful and sobering new film The Zone of Interest will be shown at the Park Theatre for one week starting this Friday, February 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Director Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth, Under the Skin) has loosely based The Zone of Interest on British author Martin Amis' 2014 book of the same title concerning the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp. However, Glazer's film makes it a more accurate historical drama about the death camp's commandant, who strives to create an idyllic home for his wife and children situated directly next to the camp wall. The juxtaposition of the two worlds is jaw-dropping, with the family seemingly oblivious to the atrocities that are occurring right next to them.

The Zone of Interest has received five 2024 Academy Award nominations, including Best International Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture overall, a rare occurrence. It has also received 9 BAFTA (the British Oscars) Award nominations. The film won the coveted Grand Prize Award at the 2023 Cannes Festival.

The film stars Christian Friedel as Rudolf Höss, the commandant, and Sandra Hüller as Hedwig Höss, his wife. Ms. Hüller gave a critically acclaimed portrayal of the wife in the Hitchcockian thriller of last year, Anatomy of A Fall.

The film is in German with English subtitles. It will screen until Thursday, February 22. The film will be shown in the Eppes and King Auditoriums.

Tickets for the film are $10 ($9 for seniors, children, students, teachers & active military). They can be purchased at the box office or in advance online at the theparktheatre.org. The box office telephone number is (603) 532-8888.

Agriculture Committee advances omnibus legislation in support of farming, sustainability, and food systems

(Boston, MA) - On Tuesday, February 6, the Joint Committee on Agriculture, chaired by Representative Paul Schmid (D-Westport) and Senator Jo Comerford (D-Northampton), favorably advanced omnibus legislation (H.4387) incorporating key components from several bills, including bolstering equity in agriculture, support for food systems, and assistance for farmers.

"We spoke to our farmers and heard their struggles, concerns, and hopes for the future of Massachusetts farming. This bill is a reflection of those conversations and highlights the importance of investing in this industry and community." said House Chair Schmid. "This bill addresses the impacts of climate change on farms, invests in our future agricultural workforce, bolsters our local food system, prepares for emergencies, and addresses other pressing issues. I am thankful for Chair Comerford's partnership in drafting this legislation to pave a path forward for strengthening farms, as well as the leadership of Speaker Mariano for creating this Committee and displaying unwavering support for our farmers."

"This comprehensive omnibus bill, released by the Joint Agriculture Committee, addresses many of the issues plaguing the agriculture sector today. It ensures the state promotes agritourism opportunities and ensures that students attending Commonwealth vocational and technical schools are allowed to train on the proper equipment. It focuses on diversifying the state's agriculture industry, with generations of new farmers in mind. And, it re-envisions a stronger Massachusetts local food system," said Senate Chair Comerford. "I am grateful for Chair Schmid's leadership and collaboration on this Committee and our partnership in crafting this transformational omnibus legislation, as well as to Senate President Spilka for her vision and for continuing to champion the Commonwealth's farmers."

"This omnibus bill honors our strong agricultural history by taking the ambitious steps necessary to support the Commonwealth's next generation of farms. By advancing this broad piece of legislation, the Joint Committee on Agriculture has signaled its desire to strengthen our local food system based on the recommendations heard directly from farmers and stakeholders across the Commonwealth," said House Vice Chair Natalie M. Blais (D-Deerfield). "I am extremely grateful for the leadership of Chairs Schmid and Comerford, who not only stood up a new committee this session, but who have also made it a priority to hear directly from the agricultural community."

The following list of bills, some of which have been consolidated and redrafted from their original forms, are included in the omnibus legislation:

An Act relative to the Massachusetts Food Policy Council (H.99) filed by Chair Paul Schmid

Workers Party Candidates Begin Gathering Signatures for 2024 Election

Boston - Four members of the Workers Party of Massachusetts have taken out nomination papers to run for office in the 2024 election. Brandon J. Griffin (candidate for United States Senate), Laura Saylor (candidate for State Senate for the Bristol and Norfolk District), John Rivera (candidate for State Senate in the Hampden and Hampshire District), and Andrew Nelson (candidate for State Representative in the 2nd Bristol District) will begin gathering signatures immediately to secure their places on the November ballot.

These campaigns will be mobilizing volunteers in the coming weeks to reach out to voters for signatures and to register people with the Workers Party designation. Members and supporters of the Workers Party of Massachusetts will also draw on our involvement in organized labor, tenants' rights and housing justice struggles, efforts to stop the ongoing genocide in Palestine, campaigns to defund and abolish the police, and our connections with numerous other mass movements to promote our candidates and political program. The Workers Party invites everyone interested in volunteering for this effort to get in touch through our website at WorkersPartyMA.org.

The Workers Party of Massachusetts was formed in 2020 and became an official political designation in 2021. Our candidates received a combined total of over 58,000 votes in the 2022 election. Members of the Workers Party believe that the capitalist class already has two political parties and both the Democratic and Republican parties are organizations built to uphold the capitalist system. The Workers Party program states that the working class needs an independent party of our own that rejects capitalism and fights for a socialist future. The Workers Party of Massachusetts believes that our candidates' participation in these campaigns will be a step on the road to working class political power and a revolutionary transformation of society.
