Take the TOY TOWN TROLLEY On Saturdays Beginning January 11! FREE!

Beginning on Saturday, January 11, the Toy Town Trolley will be making three circuits around Winchendon and up to the Rindge shopping areas every Saturday. Rides are FREE to all residents! This service is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and sponsored by the Town of Winchendon, the Winchendon CAC, the Winchendon Council on Aging and the Winchendon CCAP Task Force.

NOTE: ORIGINAL SCHEDULE HAS CHANGED. Each circuit will start at Hyde Park and stop at the end of Pearl Drive, the Town Hall bus shelter, Dollar Tree Plaza, the YMCA/GFA bus shelter, CVS, the fire station bus shelter, Ipswich Drive, the end of Ready Drive, the end of Goodrich Drive and the Winchendon Community Park. From there the trolley will head up 202 (so you don't have to!) and stop to let off shoppers at Tractor Supply, Market Basket/Marshalls, Walmart and Hannaford. It then returns to Not Just Produced and Sippin' Serendipity and immediately starts its next circuit with Hyde Park. Shoppers who were let off on the first through fourth circuits can reboard the trolley for home when it returns.

The first circuit starts at Hyde Park at 9:15 a.m. and the last circuit leaves Hannaford at 2:51 p.m.

For a grid of the complete updated schedule with times, see https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1E0NiGrFeB_wtjV61TCosVYm0p5g4dKQ6vExvOrI9288/htmlview. Letter to the Editor

TO THE EDITOR:

Winchendon is facing a Proposition 2-1/2 override. It's a challenge because nobody likes to pay more in taxes or for anything else. However, there is a gap between anticipated revenue and all the usual budget items plus fixed costs. How do we balance the budget? The town's administration proposed eliminating funding for the public library, the senior center, and our parks and recreation department. That will happen UNLESS the Proposition 2-1/2 override passes at the May 5th election. I am sure putting funding for these three departments on the chopping block, (along with more than $1M from other line items) wasn't easy, but the money simply isn't there under the existing tax levy limit. Perhaps the thought was that those three departments aren't strictly necessary to preserve life and limb. Please consider that those targeted departments provide services and resources essential to the QUALITY of life in Winchendon.

In 1909, Mr. Charles L. Beals gave the town $25,000 to build the Beals Memorial Library. In 1882, Ephraim Murdock, Jr. bequeathed the residue of his estate to build a high school in Winchendon. It is now known as Old Murdock and houses our Senior Center. When Wendell P. Clark died in 1919, he left money for what we now call the Clark YMCA. These benefactors invested in education and quality of life for the people of Winchendon. Without those donations, most residents wouldn't have had access to such resources and services. Similar investment continues today thanks to the Robinson-Broadhurst Foundation. Without that continuing largess, those three institutions (along with our schools, churches, public safety departments, etc.) wouldn't be serving residents as they do today.

In the letter Mr. Beals sent with his donation, he said he placed no responsibility for upkeep upon the town because he believed “the citizens of this town will always provide [for the library] with public spirit and enlightened generosity.” Needless to say, a vote of thanks was immediately conveyed to Mr. Beals.

Now is the time for voters who expect and want a QUALITY life in Winchendon to step up and vote YES on May 5th and at the Town Meeting on May 19.

Thank you,
Julia White Cardinal
Winchendon, MA

Margie Major

MARGIE MAJOR
March 29, 1937 ~ March 27, 2025 (Age 87)

Margie {Mitchell} Major, formerly of Ashland Alabama, and a long-time resident of Gloucester and Winchendon MA. completed her Rainbow journey into the gates of heaven on March 27, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born March 29,1937 in a one room home in Ashland Alabama, Margie grew up in a generation where life was challenging, and hard work was the key to survival. Margie and her siblings James and Bruner {both entered the gates of heaven} spent their younger years attending school and working alongside their parents in the fields picking cotton, vegetables, milking cows, caring for pigs and chasing after chickens for daily fresh eggs.

Growing up Margie's parents Chink and Beulah Mitchell, (flying high in the gates of heaven} instilled in Margie a strong sense of independence, determination, responsibility and perseverance. She learned early on that life can be challenging. However, she continued in her life to forge forward with her strong will, knowing with hard work, determination and to prevail anything was possible.

Upon completing High School and Marrying her Army soldier love they located to Gloucester MA. after the Korean War where she raised her 4 children.

Margie was a believer in completing education. She had no issue reminding her children when she became employed by the Gloucester School system as a cafeteria worker for many years that she would be keeping eyes and ears open in order to keep up with us. She made it clear she would have no "school skippers or slackers even if it was approved school skip day. This was not up for debate and was nonnegotiable. Margie shined during her days of working. She would always go above and beyond not only with her fellow peers but with the students, sneaking in extra potato tots, milk or dessert. No matter who she worked for or worked with in whatever job may come about Margie would give her all and shine with her best.

Margie raised her children with the same style of faith, independence, responsibility, and determination that she grew up with. Nothing was impossible as she made clear. "Put your faith in God and do the very best you can in life" mom would state. From climbing on the peak of her house roof to shovel off snow, to getting in her car driving to Gloucester or a Wild trip to her home state of Alabama by herself or with her significant other Rodney. The love for her children and life brought the best out of Margie. She was adored by all who she touched, and who touched her. Mom always stated. "I want to go out with my boots on whether it was rain, shine, mud, or horse droppings" Well mom, that's exactly what you did. On March 27, 2025, at 7:44 A.M. You did just that. You completed your rainbow journey and entered those gates of glory with your boots on and ready to go. You are now set free to be with your mother, father, two brothers, your son, Russell; daughter, Belinda, the love of your life Rodney and Elizabeth {Liz} who was more of a twin sister than sister-in-law. Both enjoy your 1st of many cups of coffee in heaven. And yes, I know "You are still watching."

Margie leaves behind her son, Ernest Major of Washington State; daughter, Florence Major of Winchendon MA; her two grandsons, Sargent Lamb, Nicholas, United States Marine Corps and Christopher Lamb, {Independent Landscaper} of Winchendon MA; Chewy the dog and Pony the cat whom she loved with flying colors; 2 nieces, Tammy Suggs {Mitchell} of Ashland Ala, Velvet Mitchell Stanford {gates of heaven}; cousin Alice {Faye} Delese of Pennsylvania, as well as many relatives/friends in the South that she so loved, and all those she loved and cared for so much everywhere. Mom always referred to those she loved, cared for and admired as lifetime Golden Treasures that can never be replaced. For those that know her you will always remember her feistiness, caring, above and beyond way as well as for her yest for life. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for loving our mom/grandma. It means more than words can ever say.

Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a Service at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Gloucester. A reception will follow the burial at Trinity Congregational Church, downstairs hall, 70 Middle Street, Gloucester.
