On Fridays, lunch is served at The HUB, 5 Summer Drive, Winchendon, from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Bowling is free for seniors during this time.

2026 Dog licenses are available at the Town Clerk's office in person, or mail check with rabies certificate to Town Clerk, 109 Front St, Dept. 3, Winchendon, MA 01475. You can also put your application in the drop box outside of Town Hall or order online on the Town Clerk's page of the town website. Cost for a Spayed/Neutered dog is $10, Non-Spayed/Non-Neutered dog is $20. Please provide valid rabies certificate.

Applications Open for FY26 Senior Tax Work-Off Program

Once again this year, we are pleased to announce the Senior Work-Off program was approved at our Annual Town Meeting. This Senior Work-Off Abatement Program is allowing the Town of Winchendon the opportunity to utilize the knowledge and skills of its senior residents in exchange for credit toward the resident's property tax bill. The purpose of this program is:

To employ qualified senior citizens who will apply their earnings toward payment of a portion of their property taxes;
To increase senior citizen involvement in local government; and
To enhance municipal service by using the skills of resident senior citizens.

Qualified and income-eligible residents will accrue the Commonwealth's minimum wage per hour ($15.00 hr) toward a maximum credit of $1,100.00 per household during the fiscal year.

The criteria for this program is:

You must be 60 years old or older
Homeowner in Winchendon and occupy property
Annual income below $40,150 if single; or below $45,900 if married.

Applications for the program are now available in the Town Manager's office and on the town website at https://www.townofwinchendon.com/documentcenter/view/226, and will be accepted until the ten (10) slots are filled. There are different types of positions that are available depending on preference and qualifications of the resident and the needs of each department.

Types of past and current positions have been: Custodial services, clerical help for both School & Town, Library Aides, Senior Center Aides, Cable Station Operator, Bike Path Clean up, Painting, Light Outdoor Work and Classroom Volunteers.

Winchendon Looking for Candidates for the Board of Registrars

The Town of Winchendon is looking for a Registrar. The duties include certifying nomination papers, absentee ballot applications, and petitions. Occasionally a Registrar assists with voter registration. As a member of the Board of Registrars, you're not allowed to serve on any boards or committees or be a poll worker. If there is ever a recount, the Registrars oversee it. This is a stipend position which currently pays $240.00. Open Burning Season January 15 to May 1

The Open Burning Season runs from January 15 through May 1. Residents must get a seasonal permit for the current year from the Fire Department before they burn. A permit is $10.00. Residents must also call the Fire Department at 978-297-6346 after 9:00 a.m. each day that they plan a burn, and get permission for that day. Burning may not be allowed on days with high-risk fire conditions.

Fires should consist of only brush and forest debris. Burning of grass, hay, leaves, stumps, tires, rubbish, building material or construction debris is prohibited. Be sure to check the weather and wind conditions. NEVER LEAVE A FIRE UNATTENDED.

Toy Town Trolley Now Running Later on Saturdays!

We've expanded service hours to help more Winchendon residents--especially those in need of transportation to warming centers, shelters, and essential services.

New Saturday Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Book ahead! Saturday rides must be scheduled by 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

Door-to-door rides within Winchendon are available for:

Chapter 131, Section 40, and the Town of Winchendon Wetlands Protection Bylaw, the Winchendon Conservation Commission will hold a public hearing on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 6:05 pm to consider the Request for Determination of Applicability filed by Isaac Peckham for proposed work within the 100-foot Buffer Zone to Bordering Vegetated Wetlands at 9 Hyde Street, Assessor's Map 5B1, Parcel 17. The proposed work includes constructing a new septic system for an existing home. The hearing will be held in the Second Floor Auditorium at Town Hall - 109 Front St., Winchendon, MA 01475.     GAIL A. PATRIA
    September 23, 1953 ~ April 26, 2026 (Age 72)

    Gail A. Patria, born on September 23, 1953, in Winchendon, MA, USA, was a woman who lived life fully and passionately. Her love for crafts was only surpassed by her love for going on outings, which she used to explore the world around her and create lasting memories. Her adventurous spirit and creative mind were evident in every aspect of her life, from her professional career to her personal hobbies. Gail was a graduate of Murdock High School and worked as a secretary, first at George Bent Furniture Company and then at Digital-Hewlett-Packard in Salem, NH, showcasing her dedication and commitment in each role. She lived in Winchendon most of her life, before moving to Goffstown, NH, and Salem, VA for several years, and finally settling in Athol.

    Remembered for her vibrant spirit and warm heart, Gail lived a life that was as varied and intricate as the crafts she loved so much. Her journey led her to many places, each one leaving a lasting mark on her life and personality. Her brothers, Richard and David Vaillancourt, and her cousin, Joni LaPlante, survive her. She was predeceased by her father, Wilfred Vaillancourt, her mother, Anita Vaillancourt, and her fiancé, Frederick Upkowski. Each relationship was a testament to Gail's capacity for love and her ability to touch the lives of those around her.

    Gail will have a calling hour from 9:00 - 10:45 am with her funeral at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 11:30 am in the Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central St., Winchendon, MA, with a burial following at Calvary Cemetery.

    It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Catherine Elizabeth Taft, who departed from this world on April 19, 2026, enveloped by the love of her family. Born on June 7, 1949, in Winchendon, Massachusetts, Catherine's life was a testament to resilience, a love for life, and a deep commitment to her family and community.

    Her spirit was as vibrant as the colorful gardens she tenderly cared for, her crocheted creations embodied her meticulous attention and love for detail.Catherine was a steadfast worker, dedicating her life and career to the Ball Bearing Manufacturing industry, where she served for many years at Millapore.

    Her dedication and commitment to her work were admirable, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to work with her. Outside of work, Catherine was a woman of many passions. She found joy in life's simple pleasures, like spending a sunny afternoon gardening or crocheting beautiful pieces to gift her loved ones.

    Her love for animals was profound, and her home was always a sanctuary for the pets she adored. While Catherine was preceded in death by her loving parents, Jim and Louise Brewer, and her beloved husband, Lawrence Taft, her legacy continues to be cherished by her son, Joshua and his wife, Jennifer; her daughter, Sarah and her husband James; and her five grandsons, who were the apples of her eye. Catherine's love, laughter, and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
